Personnaly, I think risk zero doesn't exist, low risk is what we can do.
If you are connected, antivirus alone is not enough. You need to have: an antivirus – a firewall – an antispyware – an antispam

Don't forget this: Never put two antivirus in one pc, it's not a good solution to be safe because most of the time they are incompatible and may cause trouble on your system (bug – blue screen …)

To help you in your choice, here is a list of my prefered antivirus:
1- Zonealarm suite (all-in-one solution)
2- NOD 32
3- Bitdefender V11 (2008)
4- F-secure
5- Antivir

For firewall – antispyware – antispam, I don't yet test many of them so I don't have a list to give you.
Anyway, I'll give you my security configuration and you can see if it's fine for you too:
My antivirus: NOD 32
My firewall: I-safer
My antispyware: Spysweeper
My antispam: NOD 32

With this configuration, I have some tools to keep clean my pc.
I use "Easycleaner" to clean temporary-files and unused links.
"Regcleaner" and "regseeker" to clear and keep safe the registry.

Most of actual viruses block your access to the registry when they infected you.
So I use "regalyzer" which is the most important and powerful software in case of infection because it help you to access again the registry. You can choose to use "TuneUp" but I prefer "regalyzer" because it's a freeware.

  1. Yea I agree, the tools above are great. I’ve used most of them. Another one you probably missed would be cc cleaner. Not so much an anti virus removal software but great on clearing your computer out. PS: Opps, forgot to add this in my last post. Make sure you uninstall the ones that you don’t use. Extra programs that clog up your computer. Make people think its viruses that are slowing it down when in reality its not.StevenI use this registry scan repair to speed up my PC.
