PC2700, PC3200, 333Mhz … Do you understand these IT guys when they talk about that?? No!
But you need to know these words if you want to upgrade or to change your RAM.

The RAM-memory is one of the important part in your computer.
The more you have memory, the more your computer will be speed 😉
But don't forget this: you need to add the same type and the same speed of memory.

Let's say that your computer has now 512Mo of RAM.
If you need to upgrade to 1024Mo of RAM, you need to add 512Mo (logik  )
But be sure to add the same type of RAM: if you have 512Mo PC2700 now, you need to add one more memory RAM with 512Mo PC2700 then. The frequency should be the same.

What will happen if you add a RAM with different frequency?
With our example, you will have a computer with 1024Mo of RAM, BUT the speed will be the lower speed.
If you add a RAM with 512Mo PC2700: the memory will be 1024Mo with a speed of PC2700
If you add a RAM with 512Mo PC2100: the memory will be 1024Mo with a speed of PC2100
If you add a RAM with 512Mo PC3200: the memory will be 1024Mo with a speed of PC2700

So, before adding or changing your RAM, you need to know what kind of memory do you have 🙂
To know that, you can use freeware like CPU-Z

Here is a resume of RAM frequency

DDR1 :
Memory – Name – Frequency (RAM) – Frequency (FSB) – Speed
DDR200 – PC1600 – 200 MHz – 100 MHz – 1,6 Go/s
DDR266 – PC2100 – 266 MHz – 133 MHz – 2,1 Go/s
DDR333 – PC2700 – 333 MHz – 166 MHz – 2,7 Go/s
DDR400 – PC3200 – 400 MHz – 200 MHz – 3,2 Go/s
DDR433 – PC3500 – 433 MHz – 217 MHz – 3,5 Go/s
DDR466 – PC3700 – 466 MHz – 233 MHz – 3,7 Go/s
DDR500 – PC4000 – 500 MHz – 250 MHz – 4 Go/s
DDR533 – PC4200 – 533 MHz – 266 MHz – 4,2 Go/s
DDR538 – PC4300 – 538 MHz – 269 MHz – 4,3 Go/s
DDR550 – PC4400 – 550 MHz – 275 MHz – 4,4 Go/s

DDR2 :
Memory – Name – Frequency (RAM) – Frequency (FSB) – Speed
DDR2-400 – PC2-3200 – 400 MHz – 100 MHz – 3,2 Go/s
DDR2-533 – PC2-4300 – 533 MHz – 133 MHz – 4,3 Go/s
DDR2-667 – PC2-5300 – 667 MHz – 167 MHz – 5,3 Go/s
DDR2-675 – PC2-5400 – 675 MHz – 172,5 MHz – 5,4 Go/s
DDR2-800 – PC2-6400 – 800 MHz – 200 MHz – 6,4 Go/s

I want to upgrade my Ram to about 2GB – 3GB.at the moment mine is 2 x 512mb both same make / model but I dont understand the Mhz thing.I’ve just been checking shopping sites such as ebuyer and none have ram at 266mhz anymore and are now doing them with 533mhz and upwards, providing I use the same type of ram ( DDR2 PC2-4300 ) does it matter if the mhz is higher or not?because I plan to take out both of the sticks of ram in my computer and replace with much bigger sized ones, i.e a 2GB size stick and a 1GB size stick.would appreciate a response to this 🙂

  2. hi,I think the slots to receive RAM in your pc are for DDR1 (if your ram are in 266mhz)That means, you cannot use DDR2 RAM because they cannot fit in the slots. As you say, RAM DDR1 are hard to find now and if you find one, it will be very expensive. If you want to upgrade your RAM, you need first to upgrade your mother-board (change it to recent mother-board which can support RAM DDR2 and other new technology)
